Over the last 2 years I’ve tried numerous times getting in touch with the most outstanding contemporary animation studio in Japan and it never worked out. Now finally, thanks to Alex Zahlten from Nipponconnection, it did. Later this march I am granted access to what seems to be the most interesting source of non-independent animation – Studio 4°C. Studio 4°C, which gained recently a lot of popularity with “Genius Party” (2007) and “Genius Party Beyond” (2008 ), which are both an anthology of short animated films featuring some of the best directors, and “Mind Game” (2003), is run by a woman, Tanaka Eiko. Which is, I’d say, pretty rare in the field of animation/anime these days. Previously she has been working as producer for Studio Ghibli (“My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service“).
I can’t wait meeting Tanaka-san later this march and get a glimpse of what seems to be the most interesting Japanese animation studio at the moment.
